MSI CR650 scores an AMD E-350 Zacate APU

There’s no question that AMD’s new Fusion Zacate platform is pretty killer when it comes to ultraportables or notbooks (as we like to call ‘em), but there’s no reason the affordable, solid-performing APU couldn’t power a budget 15.6-inch system, right? Well, that’s certainly the way a few laptop manufacturers see it.

Keepin’ it real fake: the affordable, off-contract Nokia Booklet 3G you’ve been waiting for, maybe

It may not be the most timely KIRF we’ve seen, but it looks like folks that were taken with the Nokia Booklet 3G’s design but not its high, on-contract price will soon have the device they’ve been waiting for — sort of.

Samsung N350 throws LTE and HSPA+ into an intriguing new netbook proposition

Yeah, we thought netbooks were old news too, but if they all start strapping up with the latest in 4G connectivity, we might have to give them another look. The Samsung N350 is just such a machine, with dual-mode LTE and HSPA+ built in. You won’t be surprised that almost everything else is par for the affordable laptop market course: a dual-core Atom N550 CPU, that boilerplate 1,024 x 600 resolution on a 10.1-inch matte screen, 250GB of storage, 1GB of DDR3 RAM, a multicard reader, and a trifecta of USB ports.

Pew study finds majority of Americans don’t want government to prioritize affordable broadband

We hold great respect for the Pew Internet and American Life Project, whose statistical practices are transparent, robust and rarely filled with logical holes, but we have to wonder why the organization decided to ask if Americans would support affordable high-speed internet using their tax dollars. 53% of 2,252 telephoned adults said it shouldn’t be a major priority, which is significant, to be sure, but when Pew’s 2009 study showed that most individuals without broadband don’t want it, and their 2008 survey confirmed that 62 percent of dial-up user s were still A-OK, we have to imagine researchers might have seen this coming. Those with broadband don’t need it, those without it don’t want it.

Shocker! Apple approves apps for using LED on iPhone 4 as flashlight

Nah, your sarcasm detector isn’t busted — we genuinely are surprised that Apple has lifted the iron fist and allowed a piece of hardware on its handset to be used for something other than Jobs himself intended. It may seem trivial to those who haven’t witnessed Apple block the most sensible of programs in the past, but allowing applications that enable end-user control of the LED camera flash is a pretty big deal .

Aiptek leads the affordable 3D camcorder rush with its i2

Aiptek has certainly done its part to lower the prices of consumer electronics like pico projectors and pocket-sized camcorders, and now it looks set to destabilize the 3D camcorder market — a market that doesn’t even properly exist yet, with only Fujifilm’s $600 FinePix Real 3D W1 filling the need. Aiptek was showing off its i2 camcorder, a Flip -like device (even with a pop-out USB connector) that has been augmented with a second five megapixel CCD. It’s capable of recording 720p video and is set to retail for about $250, making it a relative bargain.
