iBooks Author sees 600,000 initial downloads, 3 million for iTunes U app

Apple announced on its quarterly earnings call this afternoon that iBooks Author had seen 600,000 downloads since its unveiling last week. The folks in Cupertino also mentioned that iTunes U has seen 3 million app downloads, feeling a bump from the announcement a few days ago. One other interesting tidbit: currently, 1.5 million iPads have been deployed in schools.

Tomorrow’s Apple event to focus on digital textbook publishing tools, says Bloomberg

We’ve already seen some rumors about what Apple has in store for its education-minded announcement in New York City tomorrow, and now Bloomberg is out with a report of its own that backs up some of those earlier rumblings and offers a few new details. Citing two people with knowledge of the announcement, it says that the main focus of the event will be a set of tools that will “make it easier to publish interactive textbooks and other digital educational content.” That not only includes tools for the big textbook publishers, but self-publishers as well — Bloomberg gives the example of teachers preparing materials for that week’s lesson, or scientists and historians who could publish professional-looking content without a publishing deal

Documentation Team Leadership Change

Hi everybody – Hope you all had a great holiday, and are easing into 2012 nicely! I’ll cut right to the chase with this announcement: effective pretty well immediately (as this has been in the works for a little while now), I’m stepping down as Documentation Co-lead. Awwww, sad, I know! It’s been quite the experience, and I feel like along with Jennifer and the other docs enthusiasts, we’ve gotten a lot done over the course of the last year and a bit of official leadership term. It’s been great helping set the direction of the documentation plans, and working with everyone who’s been interested in improving the documentation, as well as many of the core and contrib development teams

Matias Tactile One, SlimOne hands-on (video)

We already covered the announcement of the new Matias tactile-keyboards but couldn’t resist descending into the show floor in order to get a quick hands-on with the Canadian-made kit. The USB-powered boards contain a Bluetooth module and a physical button (with a blue LED) that you can switch between typing on your desktop and wirelessly to your device. The “Island-Style” SlimOne replicates the look and feel of the current Apple island-keyboard, but with scissor keys, which pleasantly resist your fingers

Deezer added a few notches to its music streaming belt yesterday, with the announcement of its long awaited rollout to (nearly) every corner of the globe. The launch, confirmed at Le Web in Paris yesterday, has already brought the service to both Ireland and the Netherlands, with plans to expand across Europe by the end of this month. Users in Canada and Latin America can expect to receive the French service by the end of January, Australia and Africa should see it by the end of February, and everyone else by the middle of next year.
