Twonky Beam Browser hands-on

Showing your friends the latest viral video traditionally requires huddling around a smartphone or tablet, which is odd when you’re sat in a room with a 40-inch flat-screen. Web connected TVs or media units like the Apple TV will let you watch YouTube as long as you spend five minutes tediously inputting the search term on your remote. For those of us who can’t afford a unified Airplay setup, there’s PacketVideo’s Twonky Beam Browser, which lets you push mobile content to your TV as fast as your wireless router can handle it

Apple reportedly discussing its ‘vision for the future of TV’ with media execs

We wouldn’t bet the farm on those “Apple is building an HDTV” rumors just yet, but tonight the Wall Street Journal reports the company is still interested invading the living room in a real way, based on “vague” talks with media executives. That vision includes a TV that packs wireless streaming with AirPlay to deliver TV shows and movies as well as technology it’s developed to tie-in DVR storage and iCloud, but also focuses on personalized, synchronized access across other devices including phones and tablets

Apple update twofer: Apple TV hits 4.4.4 (9A406a), minor iOS 5.0.1 bump hits iPhone 4S

Here’s a question: why, as a major consumer electronics company, would you introduce just one software update in a day, when you could just as easily introduce two ?

BBC’s global iPlayer app adds AirPlay streaming, should just be on Apple TV

British expats and international fans of BBC television alike can now stream some Gavin & Stacey to their televisions (past season 1 anyway, which is on Netflix and Amazon Prime Instant Video), as long as they’re properly equipped. The global iPlayer app for iPad has been updated with AirPlay streaming (those in the UK however, have no such luck so far) so once users update to iOS 5 and buy an Apple TV box, they’re in business. Of course, this would all be much simpler if iPlayer were just available on the Apple TV itself (without XBMC or other hacks), but no one asked us, did they

iOS 5 beta 7 goes live for developers

Well, you can’t say Cupertino isn’t being consistent. Just like last time, Apple’s gone and released a new beta of iOS 5, less than two weeks after the last one . Not much of interest pops out of build 9A5313E’s release notes, but we’d presume it squashes a fair share of bugs

Apple TV streams purchased TV shows — not just rentals — from the cloud after update

Don’t think Apple’s forgotten about its little hobby, as the second generation Apple TV is getting an update today that lets users buy TV shows and stream them (in high definition) directly to the device, with the additional bonus of streaming access to previously purchased shows. That brings a new feeling of permanence — already available from others like Zune and Vudu — to the cloud atmosphere around Apple’s hockey puck, but it also means being $2.99 invested in rewatching that episode of Leverage down the road instead of opting for for a 99-cent rental
