Ultra-thin handheld microscope could sniff out skin cancer, forged documents

It may not look like it, but that sleek black thing pictured above is actually a microscope . Designed by engineers at Germany’s Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Optics and Precision Engineering IOF, this little guy boasts a 5.3mm optical length, rendering it slim enough to fit in the palm of your hand, yet powerful enough to deliver images at a scanner-like resolution of five micrometers, over a wide surface area. Fraunhofer’s researchers achieved this balance by essentially tossing out the manual on traditional microscope design.

BMW shows off first ‘official’ iPad integration, convinces us to go aftermarket

Look, BMW — we appreciate that you were the first automaker to provide seamless iPod integration way back when , but seriously, did anyone on the design squad look at this abomination before shipping it off to France? As the story goes, the aforesaid automaker has demonstrated the first “official” iPad-vehicle integration setup at this year’s Paris Auto Show, and to be frank, it’s heinous.

Steve Jobs Replies: No, iPad Won’t Support Picasa

Steve Jobs seemingly elected to reply to another question sent to his SJobs [at] apple.com email address yesterday, this time in response to a question about support for Google’s Picasa photo sharing service on the iPad: In short: no, the iPad won’t support Picasa albums or face recognition … and Jobs takes the opportunity to point out that iPhoto does a better job in his opinion. 9to5Mac , which first posted the thread, confirmed the authenticity of the mail by the mail headers.
