Apple hires former Dixons CEO John Browett as senior VP of Retail

More than six months after Ron Johnson’s departure , Apple has finally found a new retail chief to replace him, in one John Browett. The Cambridge- and Wharton-educated Browett will be coming to Cupertino in April after serving nearly five years as CEO of Dixons — the Taj Mahal of British retail. Before that, he held a smattering of obscurely defined “executive positions” at Tesco plc and advised retail clients at Boston Consulting Group

BeagleBone board boots up XBMC Eden, shows off its media prowess

BeagleBoard isn’t letting the Raspberry Pi steal all the glory in the battle for low-cost computing supremacy. The $35 ARM11-based Pi may win on price, but at least the BeagleBone can hold its own in terms of power. After the Model B was demoed pushing XBMC and AirPlay capabilities, some intrepid devs managed to get the second beta of Eden up and running on the ARM A8 dev board

Comcast’s extra ads ruin NFC championship game conclusion in some areas

It wasn’t just RIM that had designs on the limelight during the football action last night. Comcast commercials appeared over the NFC Championship game last night, thoughtfully playing over the climax of the match ‘twixt the Giants and the 49ers.

Surprise! People like free stuff, Amazon’s lending library a success

You can always count on people’s desire to avoid paying for stuff. That’s why it shouldn’t come as any surprise that Amazon’s Lending Library is such a success. The free perk available to Prime customers who also happen to be Kindle owners launched in November with just 5,000 books available.

Rakuten completes purchase of Kobo

It’s been just over two months since Rakuten announced its intention to snatch up all of Kobo’s shares for $315 million, following the collapse of the eReading company’s primary retail partner — Borders. Even though its new parent company is based out of Japan Kobo’s headquarters will remain in Toronto. The two were also quick to tout the potential expanded marketplace that will be available to Kobo thanks to the popularity of Rakuten’s various properties, including Buy.com.
