Google to receive regular privacy audits following FTC ruling on Buzz

Well, it looks like the spectre of Buzz will be looming large over Google for some time to come — the company has just reached an agreement with the FTC that will see it receive independent privacy audits every two years for the next twenty years following a ruling that found Google violated its own privacy policy with the service. In a blog post today, Google also says that it will now “ask users to give us affirmative consent” before it makes any changes in how it shares their personal information, and it adds that it would like to “apologize again for the mistakes we made with Buzz.” As for the FTC, chairman Jon Leibowitz describes the settlement as a “tough” one, and says simply that “when companies make privacy pledges, they need to honor them.” Google to receive regular privacy audits following FTC ruling on Buzz originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 30 Mar 2011 16:27:00 EDT

Google Buzz Makes Popular Users Less Overwhelming

The Google Buzz team made changes today that prevent popular postings from overwhelming your inbox – that’s good news if you follow popular feeds like the Mashable Google Buzz account . The problem: since Google Buzz pushes items into your inbox whenever new comments are left after yours, popular postings can become noisy. Today the Buzz team announced that they’ll “bump” popular postings less frequently to keep them out of your inbox.

Google Plans to Add Filtering Improvements to Buzz

The Wall Street Journal reports that more changes are planned for Buzz in response to user feedback, including the option to block conversations and other filtering features. Even as Buzz impressed some social media enthusiasts, it also angered some folks for various reasons — the most significant being that it’s a bit noisy and difficult to sort through, and that it isn’t quite as privacy-friendly as everyone would have preferred. The WSJ says Google assembled important company figures into a “war room” where they discussed ways to respond to user criticism.
