Alienware X51 gaming PC: We go hands-on at the London launch event

Alienware’s latest PC is an attempt to fire a salvo right across the bows of Sony and Microsoft’s gaming flagships. It looks like the (slightly overweight) lovechild of the pair; like an alternate universe console. The X51 borrows liberally from the design schools of both the Xbox (matte sides) and the PlayStation 3 (slot-loading optical drive, front panel gloss).

ADZero bamboo smartphone prototypes hands-on (video)

We were so beguiled by AD’s bamboo-bound smartphone that we had to track down the designer to get some hands-on time with these work-in-progress prototypes. We met up with Kieron-Scott Woodhouse (pun unintended) and he offered to bring along several of the latest prototypes for us to get to grips with. While the finished product will arrive in the lighter bamboo finish, the darker model’s button layout is closer to what we can expect on the final device.

Sony’s Underwater Cybershot TX200V Is the iPhone’s Fat Photo-Taking Cousin

Sony’s new glass-faced TX200V is a decidedly opulent stab at something we’ve been asking for around here: a waterproof camera that doesn’t sacrifice optics and design.

How to Get to the Seafloor Without Holding Your Breath

Before we had ALVIN—or proper submarines for that matter—the best way to get to the seafloor was by using a diving bell.

How the Video Game Was Born

This year, the video game turns 40. Let’s call it an occasion to spend a few more hours in front of our TVs, the place where it all started.

Today’s Scuttlebot: Video Game Rats and Groupon’s Snake Serum

The technology reporters and editors of The New York Times scour the Web for important and peculiar items. Wednesday’s selection includes items on the design of video games, the numbers of iPhones sold versus the number of babies born worldwide and a Groupon claim that ran afoul of British regulators.
