Drive time: RMIT’s new in-car entertainment system

Researchers in Australia and Germany hope to bring fun and functional applications to the inside of your car Researchers at Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) in Australia and Germany are developing an in-car entertainment system that aims to solve the age-old “Are we nearly there yet?” problem with the aid of motion controls and holographic displays. Tentatively titled Enjoyable Interactions in the Rear Seat, the project will attempt to mix holographic displays and off-the-shelf motion sensing technology similar to gaming systems like the Microsoft Kinect and the Nintendo Wii to create a variety of rear-seat applications designed for use on long car trips by both adults and children.

Google offers free calls to (US) Gmail users: should Skype and telcos worry?

The search company is aiming to undercut international call rates and set up phone boxes in universities and airports for its call product Google has added free voice calls over the internet to its free email service Gmail in the US – although some UK users have found they can also use the service to make calls to the US for free. The service, unveiled on Wednesday night, will let users make free calls at least to the end of this year within the US and Canada

Innocent glasses transform into GPS-equipped routing mechanism… on video!

The Powers That Be may think that they’re pulling the wool over our eyes, but we can see the planned fate unfolding in front of us. Before long, our arms will be effectively useless — after all, once you can game and navigate with just your face, why bother pumping iron and keeping those biceps toned? Over at Wireless Japan 2010, the Nakajima Laboratory at the University of Electro-Communications showcased a prototype that helps explain the latter

Bing Maps’ Taxi Fare Calculator keeps your lollygagging cab driver in check

We’ve all been there — you step into a cab in a foreign place, ask your driver to head to your destination, and then he / she asks you if you’d rather take the highway or go direct. Or, worse still, senses your innocence and proceeds to head the wrong direction for two or three miles.

Fujitsu’s wireless guidance system promises to free patients from the waiting room

It may not do much to speed up wait times, but Fujitsu is at least doing its part to make the time outpatients spend at hospitals and clinics a bit easier. It’s announced a new wireless outpatient guidance system, which packs an electronic paper display, and accommodates a card that a patient would receive when they arrive for their appointment. When placed in the card reader, the device would automatically register the patient at the hospital or clinic, guide them to their destination, and continually inform them of their wait time and place in line.
