‘Phantom sensation’ haptic tech recreates the feeling of getting virtually stabbed

When it comes to gaming, the more realistic the better, right? Sure, it’s all fun until we start talking about being virtually sliced with a battle axe or pelted with a rocket launcher — exactly the idea behind a new technology dubbed “phantom sensation.” Researchers at the University of Electro-Communications know that to virtually recreate the feeling of touch , they need to apply vibrations to two points of skin. Taking the idea one step further, they applied the stimuli to either side of the body to mimic what it might feel like if the object actually passed through.

DataBot mouse and HDD concepts give weight to files, encourage data purges (video)

Mice have been a computing mainstay since pretty close to the dawn of the PC, but they don’t offer much in terms of information about the on-screen data you’re interacting with.

Students build self-balancing TIPI robot, plan new world order (video)

Remember this guy, the QB robot that was priced at a whopping $15 grand ? Seemingly, the webcam wheeler inspired a team of young minds at the University of Waterloo , who’ve unleashed the DIY in themselves to build one of their own.

Sony poster at CES shows unannounced, extremely slim-looking phone (update: probably the Anzu)

Sony’s CES banners have been unfurled around the Las Vegas Convention Center here and one of them has a particularly alluring, and particularly skinny, phone to show us. The above image of half a touchscreen handset (more closeup photography of which you’ll find in the gallery below) shows a Sony Ericsson brand and what looks like a 3.5mm headphone jack — the latter of which would suggest that this phone is no more than six or seven millimeters thick.

Viliv to debut Android-based X7, X10, Windows 7-based X70 tablets at CES

We can’t say for sure just yet, but we’re starting to get the feeling that we’re going to see lots of tablets at CES . The latest to join the party is Viliv , which has just announced that it will be showing off its new Android-based X7 and X10 tablets, along with the Windows 7-based X70 “slate” — the latter of which is touted to be the “most slim and light Windows 7 based tablet in the world,” and is presumably a successor to the company’s existing X70 tablet

SuONOIO synth takes soundgeeks from zero to tweaking in fewer than 60 cycles (video)

We’ll admit that sometimes it doesn’t take much to get our engines running here at Engadget HQ. If you can throw a couple of knobs, exposed circuitry, a 9v battery, and a sense of adventure into a semi-coherent package, we’ll be pleased as punch. The SuONIO synthesizer, therefore, makes us very happy indeed.
