Report: Apple mulling second Israeli facility after Anobit purchase

It looks like Apple’s acquisition of Anobit was only one part of its Israel-based plans — business daily Calcalist is claiming that the company will open a research center there by the end of February. It’s unrelated to the purchase of the flash-chip maker, since Ed Frank was apparently despatched to scope out suitable bases for a new facility in early 2011. It’s reportedly going to be based in the Matam Technology District, south of Haifa, adjacent to similar facilities operated by Microsoft , Intel and Philips

SlingPlayer for Kindle Fire headed your way (hands-on)

The SlingPlayer for Kindle Fire was hiding amongst its siblings on the CES floor so of course we had to stop by and check it out. It fits right in the family of products, but the first version due to hit the AmazonAppstore this month for $29 will not include the guide or onscreen remote. You will of course be able to view the source’s native guide and navigate via onscreen buttons, but the buttons just won’t look like your source’s remote

Toshiba FlashAir wireless LAN SD card hands-on (video)

The first card using the SD association’s Wireless LAN standard is Toshiba’s FlashAir and we’ve just spent some time with it here at CES. It’s much like existing Eye-Fis insofar that it also crams WiFi into a diminutive SD card, but instead of merely being able to join a network, the FlashAir creates its own outright. The 8GB class six card broadcasts an 802.11b/g/n hotspot, replete with its own web server onboard, which means its contents — like say pictures you’ve previously snapped in your camera — can be accessed in a browser by any connected device

Adobe’s Todd Teresi to lead Apple’s iAd unit, fully purge himself of Flash reliance

It had to happen at some point, right? Adobe and Apple — two names in a similar field — would inevitably end up hiring someone that worked at the other firm in a past life, and unsurprisingly, the world is up in arms about an acquisition that would go unreported if not for the past drama between the two outfits . As the story goes, Todd Teresi (formerly of Adobe) has been hired to be the new chief of Apple’s iAd mobile advertising division, but since the hire hasn’t been officially confirmed, it’s all based on “sources familiar with the matter.” Interestingly, Bloomberg BusinessWeek asserts that the iAd team has been “cutting prices to keep customers from jumping ship to rivals, including Google,” noting that the dominance seen in the tablet market isn’t exactly translating on the advertising side
