US Wi-Fi Xooms now getting Ice Cream Sandwich OTA

You might have thought being the first Honeycomb tablet, and offering a completely stock Android experience, would give the Motorola Xoom some sort of priority when it comes to updates to Android 4.0. Sadly and surprisingly for tablet early-adopters that was not the case, with the Transformer Prime first to hop the update train to Ice Cream Sandwich Town. A week later the Xoom is now catching up, with an OTA update percolating down from the cloud to users, but for the moment it appears only American Wi-Fi versions of the slate are receiving

Apple stops renting TV shows in iTunes, could be working on a new kind of video service

Apple has pulled the plug on TV episode rentals via iTunes, abruptly leaving customers with only the option of purchasing per episode — good thing you can watch those on your Apple TV streamed from the cloud — or a Season Pass where available. AllThingsD has a quote from spokesman Tom Neumayr indicating this was in response to customers that “overwhelmingly prefer buying TV shows.” Making the timing of the move particularly curious are once-again renewed rumors of an Apple HDTV and a WSJ profile of new CEO Tim Cook that indicates the company is “working on new technology to deliver video to televisions, and has been discussing whether to try to launch a subscription TV service.” Like Google , any move depends on its success in negotiating a new delivery model from the networks, who so far have been averse to anything that threatens their existing relationship with pay-TV providers

Google+ to require that profiles be visible to all, will boot private profiles after July 31st

Don’t want anyone searching for you on Google+ ? No problem! Just leave your profile marked as private and Google will punt your page from the cloud after July 31st. If you still want your profile around come August, you’ll need to mark it as public before that deadline

Apple’s iTunes Cloud Patent Isn’t What We Expected [Apple]

Apple’s patented the obvious and the expected : a way to store and stream your iTunes library from the cloud. But there’s one weird twist—the option to only partially push your media up to the sky.

Nikon debuts Android-powered stereoscopic picture frame, 2D to 3D conversions for a monthly fee

2D to 3D conversion techniques — whether cinematic or otherwise — don’t have us jumping for joy, but Nikon’s new NF-300i display sounds like a concept we could get behind. It’s a 7.2-inch digital photo frame running Android 2.1 on an autostereoscopic (glasses-less) screen, which sports a special double-density lenticular lens to display images at full WSVGA resolution (800 x 600) whether in 2D or 3D modes. It pulls down images from the cloud to 4GB of internal storage over wired ethernet and 802.11 b/g WiFi, or via USB port if you happen to have MPO files just sitting around for some reason .

Apple’s Lala music team working on video streaming service for 2010 launch?

When Apple acquired Lala , the obvious use for all that local scanning and internet streaming technology would have been to serve up our hard-drive-based iTunes music libraries from the cloud. Here we are though, eight months later, and the only significant impact from the acquisition was the closure of the Lala music service
