ADZero bamboo smartphone prototypes hands-on (video)

We were so beguiled by AD’s bamboo-bound smartphone that we had to track down the designer to get some hands-on time with these work-in-progress prototypes. We met up with Kieron-Scott Woodhouse (pun unintended) and he offered to bring along several of the latest prototypes for us to get to grips with. While the finished product will arrive in the lighter bamboo finish, the darker model’s button layout is closer to what we can expect on the final device.

Engadget HD Podcast 284 – 01.31.2012

It’s earnings season, which adds a businessy angle to this week’s Engadget HD podcast but that’s not dimming our spirits when we’ve got new Harmony remotes from Logitech on the (distant) horizon. Verizon, Netflix and Apple also have numbers to talk about, but if spreadsheets aren’t your thing we’ve also got our impressions of the Boxee Box Live TV dongle and advice ahead of Super Bowl XLVI this weekend

Samsung unveils redesigned Series 9 laptops with 13- and 15-inch displays, starting at $1,399

The Samsung Series 9 debuted at an odd time, before “Ultrabook” was a buzz word, and when a 2.8-pound laptop was novel enough to warrant a $1,649 price tag. A year later, it returns at an even more pivotal moment: Ultrabooks are cropping up by the dozens, and while their specs are similar to what the original Series 9 had to offer, they cost hundreds less. So with that as the backdrop, Samsung just announced a pair of slimmed-down, redesigned Series 9 laptops: a 13-inch remake, priced at $1,399 and up, and a new 15-inch form number that will cost $1,499-plus when the two go on sale next month

Windows 8 on a laptop in-depth preview (video)

Less than 24 hours after it went live on Microsoft’s site, Steve Ballmer reported a whopping 500,000 downloads of Windows 8 Developer Preview. That’s half a million copies, if not eager Windows fans. Well, you can count us among them.

Sony Alpha NEX-7 hands-on preview (video)

There are some cameras that we would be willing to use in a bind, some that we wouldn’t hesitate to shoot with, and a very select few that would motivate a cross-country journey, just for the chance to spend a few days behind the lens. Sony’s Alpha NEX-7 falls within that incredibly unique final category — in fact, we’ve done just that, flying from New York to San Diego to go hands-on with one of only a half-dozen pre-production samples to have landed on American soil. After seeing a very early NEX-7 prototype a few months ago, it didn’t take much convincing to get us on a plane
