Microsoft strikes deal with 24/7, promises to ‘redefine’ customer service

A partnership between Microsoft and customer service company 24/7 may not exactly sound like the most exciting proposition on the face of things, but the two are making some fairly lofty promises, and Microsoft seems to be making a serious investment in the initiative. As ZDNet’s Mary Jo Foley reports, part of the deal will see Microsoft send at least some of the 400 employees it brought on in its 2007 acquisition of TellMe Networks to 24/7, and it will also license some of its speech-related IP to the company (in addition to taking an equity stake in it). The goal there being to combine natural user interfaces with a cloud-based customer service platform, which Microsoft promises will “redefine what customer service looks like.” To that end, it gives the example of a credit card company getting in touch with you to report suspicious behavior; rather than a phone call, you could get a notification with all the pertinent details sent directly to your phone, which could anticipate a number of potential actions and let you respond by voice (or touch, presumably)

Duracell Powermat hands-on (video)

Back in September, as you may recall, Duracell struck a joint venture with Powermat, as part of an effort to “advance and globalize wireless charging.” At CES this week, the two companies are putting the fruits of their partnership on full display, and we were lucky enough to get a sneak peek at their latest inductive innovation. The basic idea behind the initiative is to bring wireless charging platforms to a variety of environs, including desk drawers, toy boxes and even sports arenas. In fact, Duracell Powermat are already planning to install their circular grommets (pictured above) at various locations across Madison Square Garden, allowing concertgoers and Knick fans to inductively charge their smartphones directly on a bartop

7 Ways Google Labs Changed the Internet Forever

Google closed the doors on Google Labs today. The ongoing projects aren’t disappearing; they’ll be absorbed into other departments, and many have already “graduated” into full-fledged products. The spirit and mission of the initiative will live on, just in a decidedly less centralized way.

FCC going after cellphone jammers, could land users in the slammer

The FCC has put a bounty on the heads of all the cellphone-hating vigilantes out there. These GPS and signal jammers are particularly popular amongst theaters, quiet restaurants and in many school systems fighting the good fight against sexting during class. The FCC is calling on folks to stop and to report their neighbors for using these devices — reason being that they pose serious health and safety risks by interfering with 911 calls and other emergencies in the vicinity

Mitsubishi launching eight electrified vehicles by 2015

Mitsu’s i MiEV may be getting off to a slow start , but it’s just the beginning. The company has announced a number of programs collectively titled “Environment Initiative Program 2015,” a sort of stepping stone toward a broader reaching “Environmental Vision 2020.” That Vision indicates a desire to have 20 percent of Mitsubishi sales be either pure electric vehicles or at least plug-in hybrids. The 2015 initiative sets a more modest goal of five percent, and to get there the company will launch a whopping eight electro-augmented vehicles between now and 2015.

Europe drops €22M into Symbian, Harrods shopping spree seems inevitable

Don’t count the Symbian Foundation out just yet, because the European Commission has emerged like a knight in shining armor thanks to a €22 million public / private joint investment and a new consortium of some 24 organizations awkwardly called SYMBEOSE: “Symbian – the Embedded Operating System for Europe.” Needless to say, it seems like some of the higher-ups across the continent are feeling a little emotional about the hometown platform — especially now that it’s starting to take a lot of heat — and have thrown some skin in the game to keep things interesting. For its part, the Foundation says that the initiative (and presumably the money) will go toward developing “new core platform capabilities,” exploring cloud computing, and broadening the platform’s hardware ecosystem, among other things.
