Apple to rely on Intel’s Sandy Bridge graphics in future MacBooks, AMD GPUs in MacBook Pros?

Apple will use Intel’s Sandy Bridge CPUs in its future laptops, no surprises there, but what’s interesting about these forthcoming machines is that some of them might rely solely on Intel’s chip for both general and graphical processing tasks. That’s the word from the usual “sources familiar with Apple’s plans,” who expect “MacBook models with screen sizes of 13 inches and below” to eschew the inclusion of a discrete GPU and ride their luck on the improved graphical performance of Intel’s upcoming do-it-all chip

Unreleased Alienware M17x spotted running next-gen Intel Sandy Bridge chip

Intel’s full unveil of the next-gen Sandy Bridge processor line isn’t due until January , but the products are already starting to leak out. The M17x is our second 17-incher ( HP’s dv7 being the first), and this time we’ve got in-the-wild shots and benchmarks to chew on. In 3DMark06 a 2GHz Core i7-2630QM machine running Intel’s integrated graphics scored 15,940, while a 2.2GHz i7-2720QM with AMD Radeon HD 6900M graphics nailed a 20,155 mark, and a 2.3GHz i7-2820QM chip paired with a GeForce GTX 460M GPU did 16,957

Intel HD graphics to support 3D this summer, 30 more WiDi laptops on the way

Intel’s integrated graphics are about to get a stereoscopic shot in the arm this summer. Although the Computex presentation today wasn’t clear on whether it would come in the form of a firmware update or all-new hardware, we’re being promised the ability to watch 3D movies straight off Blu-ray discs. Mind you, the GMA HD graphics aren’t aimed at competing with NVIDIA’s 3D Vision or any other heavyweights, not least because they’ll be relying on polarized lenses to generate that extra sense of depth.

Intel kills Larrabee discrete GPU, will focus on integrated graphics

Intel’s been promising to blow up the graphics market with its Larrabee GPU for over three years now with virtually nothing to show for it, and it looks like the company has finally decided to can the entire project after downsizing it to a “software platform” last year. A new Intel blog post on the matter says the company won’t bring a discrete graphics chip to market, and will instead focus on integrated graphics for everyday computing and highly-parallel multicore processors for high-performance computing. Now, Intel’s obviously still in the graphics game, and it’s already made a strong move towards integrated graphics by building GPUs right into the Atom N470 and much of the Core 2010 line, but on a much broader level the decision to drop Larrabee means that Intel is now essentially pursuing the same strategies as its competitors: AMD is famously behind schedule with its Fusion project but plans to ship ATI-powered hybrid CPU / GPUs next year, and NVIDIA has been pushing its multicore GPU-based Tesla high-performance computing platform for a while now

Intel GMA HD graphics review deems them excellent for video, mediocre for gaming

Our Intel Arrandale / Clarkdale review bonanza was sprinkled with a few graphics benchmarks, but there was never a concerted effort to break down the specific upgrades on the 45nm GPU that comes as part of the new CPU package.
