Megaupload co-founder’s bail appeal rejected

While users housing content on the troubled Megaupload site were given a two-week reprieve , one of its co-founders is having less luck. Kim Dotcom has lost his appeal for bail, with prosecutors fearing that he would flee from New Zealand and return to his native Germany, possibly making him safe from extradition.

Motorola wins permanent injunction against Apple’s iCloud in German court (update: products pulled)

There’s another legal brouhaha brewing in Germany, where Motorola today won an injunction against Apple’s iCloud. In a decision handed down from the infamous Mannheim Regional Court this morning, Judge Andreas Voss issued a permanent injunction against Cupertino’s cloud-based service and any devices that use it, following a complaint that Motorola originally filed in April of last year. The two companies, as you may recall, have been going at each other rather aggressively in Germany, where Motorola scored a similar victory , back in November

A Parisian commercial court has upheld a lower court’s ruling against Google France, ordering the company to pay a fine of €500,000 for giving away its maps services . The plaintiff, Bottin Cartographes, claims that Google leveraged the market share of its Maps platform — and the fact that it’s free — to undercut and stifle competition attempting to sell their topographical wares

German court denies Apple request for preliminary ban on Galaxy Tab 10.1N and Galaxy Nexus sales

You win some, and you lose some, right, Apple? Hot on the heels of its latest victory in Dusseldorf keeping the Galaxy Tab 10.1 out of Deutschland, Apple was denied similar satisfaction in Munich today. Bloomberg’s reporting that the Munich Regional Court denied Cupertino’s motion to exclude Sammy’s 10.1N and Galaxy Nexus from store shelves due to infringement of a touchscreen patent granted last year.

It’s Time for Apple to Stop Patent Trolling

Intellectual property is important. There’s no denying that. But there’s a line between protecting yourself and just trying to kill everybody around you.

In the wake of Megaupload crackdown, fear forces similar sites to shutter sharing services?

The Feds put the smackdown on Megaupload and its whole executive team last week, charging the them with criminal charges for copyright infringement and racketeering in addition to conspiracy to commit copyright infringement and money laundering. As a result, it appears that several other cloud locker companies have curbed their sharing ways to avoid similar DOJ entanglements. FileSonic and Fileserve have eliminated file sharing from their service menus, and Uploaded.to is no longer available to those of us in the US

Microsoft and Barnes & Noble agree to eliminate one patent and multiple claims from ITC infringment case

Patent lawsuits start out the same way: company X hurls a slew of infringement allegations at company Y, the court demands that the fat be trimmed, and the case’s scope is distilled so that only the strongest claims remain. Microsoft’s ITC patent case against Barnes & Noble is currently in the midst of this streamlining process, and the parties have agreed to drop claims from four of the patents at issue and eliminated one patent from the proceedings altogether. A full accounting of all the bits of IP that have been eliminated can be found at the source link below.

IBM maintains top spot in global patent rankings, Canon overtakes Microsoft

IBM has been selling off a sizable number of its patents these past few months, but according to a new research report, the company still ended 2011 with the world’s largest artillery. For the 19th straight year, IBM has come out on top of IFI Claims Patent Services’ annual rankings of the world’s top 50 US utility patent holders, with a record 6,180 patents. That’s up five percent from 2010, though there are several contenders hot on its heels
