Apple iCloud: what the analysts say

Technology analysts say iCloud puts Apple at ahead of its rivals, and is likely to encourage even bigger takeup of Apple devices Cloud-based consumer data services might not be new, but the iCloud service Apple announced last night marks a major step towards the mainstream. Returning from sick leave for the string of announcements at Apple’s World Wide Developer Conference, chief executive Steve Jobs made the most significant statement of the night: “We’re going to demote the PC and the Mac to just be a device – just like an iPad, an iPhone or an iPod Touch

Antares ATG-6 brings auto-tune to the guitar, can’t retroactively save Lil’ Wayne’s SNL solo

Antares ain’t the first company to provide individual control to each string on a guitar (hello, Roland!), but the outfit’s new ATG-6 technology takes things one step closer to being acceptable by the mainstream. Rather than forcing users to process separate string signals via an external device, this here rendition aims to tuck everything within the body. In the demo just past the break, a Seymour Duncan HEX pickup is used, and while it’s connected via a MIDI cable, it’s most certainly not a MIDI guitar — that’s strictly used for control

Twitter to developers: we want to own the pipes, water, and faucets, but feel free to make soap

An announcement by Ryan Sarver, a member of the platform team at Twitter , could spell bad news for makers of third-party apps that access the growing social network and new ones looking to get in on the action. In a move that will inevitably cause quite a ruckus among developers and tweeters alike, Twitter has essentially decided that no new apps should be developed “that mimic or reproduce the mainstream Twitter consumer client experience.” He goes on to say that existing apps will continue to function, but that the bar will be raised in terms of quality and consistency

Verizon to demo Home Monitoring and Control system at CES, launch pilot in Jersey next month

Looks like home automation may finally be taking baby steps towards the mainstream — Verizon’s just announced that it’ll be demoing that long-rumored Home Monitoring and Control system at CES 2011, with a planned beta rollout in New Jersey to follow. The system will allow users to remotely view security cameras, lock doors, and control lights, thermostats, and appliances through their smartphones or FiOS TV boxes — the same capabilities most other automation systems offer, but with the added benefit of being integrated and installed by Verizon.

Nexus S review

It can be difficult to review a phone like Google’s Nexus S in a world already populated by so many outstanding Android devices. Not only does the manufacturer of this phone make a series of handsets that are all essentially the same (the Galaxy S line), but countless other OEMs are cranking away on hardware for the platform.
