German court rejects Samsung’s second 3G patent complaint against Apple

About a week after suffering a legal setback in Germany, Samsung received another bit of bad news this morning, when the Mannheim Regional Court rejected the second of its patent infringement claims against Apple. As with last week’s ruling, today’s decision addresses one of Samsung’s arguments that Apple’s 3G / UMTS technology infringes upon its patents. Judge Andreas Voss officially shot down these claims early this morning, though he didn’t offer an immediate reason for his ruling

RIM stock falls eight percent following CEO transition

We rarely meddle with stock news around these parts, but this was a pretty significant piece of meat to chew on. After Research in Motion introduced Thorsten Heins as the new CEO last night and again in a conference call this morning, the company’s stock price tumbled a whopping 8.47 percent. When it comes to what kind of difference the transition will make for the struggling company, we haven’t had a high amount of confidence; while we hope for the best and want to see RIM turn things around, the falling stock appears to indicate that we’re not alone in expressing concerns about this morning’s events.

Sony set to launch gorgeous Xperia S at CES?

Hot on the heels of the Xperia Ion launch chez AT&T this morning, it would seem Sony may have yet another trick up its sleeve in the form of the Xperia S. While nothing is official until Sony tells us so, the newest — and if looks alone count — and nicest Xperia packs a 1280 x 720 4.3-inch display, MSM8260 dual-core thrumming away at 1.5Gz, and a 12 megapixel shooter that’ll capture at 1080p. Sadly the word is that it’ll launch in the second quarter running Android 2.3 and not our beloved Ice Cream Sandwich.

Verizon confirms LTE data services fully restored, 3G never affected

Several hours after service issues were first reported this morning, Verizon Wireless has confirmed that 4G LTE service has been restored throughout the country, and that 3G CDMA services were never affected. So that miserable half-day of reliving the pain of 3G speeds is now behind us, hopefully never to return

NASA’s Curiosity rover is on its way to Mars (video)

It’s been described by the scientist in charge as “the most complex mission that has ever been undertaken to the surface of another planet,” and NASA’s Mars Science Laboratory spacecraft is now well on its way to Mars. An Atlas V rocket carrying the Curiosity rover launched from Cape Canaveral this morning, and a successful separation of the craft occurred in space shortly thereafter, kicking off a journey to Mars that’s expected to end with a rocket-powered descent to the planet in August of next year. Video of both events are after the break, and additional details can be found at the links below Continue reading NASA’s Curiosity rover is on its way to Mars (video) NASA’s Curiosity rover is on its way to Mars (video) originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 26 Nov 2011 12:46:00 EDT.
