PS3 v4.10 update is live with an improved browser, Sony Entertainment Network nameplate

The latest update for Sony’s PlayStation 3 is live and available for download from via your PlayStation Netw…oops, Sony Entertainment Network account. While we get used to the new branding (nothing we could see in the system UI has actually changed at all), there’s a few tweaks included in v4.10, like some sorely needed upgrades for the web browser and the ability to set the time and date automatically upon each sign-in. A scan of the forums reveals a few who noticed problems with Netflix post-update (which may or may not be update related, deleting Netflix data from the Game Data utility section and/or installing the newest version seems to fix the issue), however most are just seeing significantly better scores in browser benchmarks like Acid3 and HTML5 Test, better compatibility with most webpages and improved YouTube playback (still 240p).

Lilyhammer (or: ‘Silvio in Norway’) now streaming on Netflix

Lilyhammer , Netflix’s first original series (shortly to be followed by the probably awful remake of House of Cards and Arrested Development season four) commenced streaming today. Little Steven (Van Zandt, of E-Street Band and Sopranos fame) plays wholly against type as a mafioso despatched by the witness protection program to Lillehammer

3DS adds to its European WiFi arsenal, gains over 5,000 free hotspots

Like any new console, the 3DS has had its share of growing pains. But the awkward acne of its first year has mostly been smoothed over, giving way to an attractive price, a library of compelling content and even DLC freebies . So, what’s left for the Big N to do?

Engadget HD Podcast 284 – 01.31.2012

It’s earnings season, which adds a businessy angle to this week’s Engadget HD podcast but that’s not dimming our spirits when we’ve got new Harmony remotes from Logitech on the (distant) horizon. Verizon, Netflix and Apple also have numbers to talk about, but if spreadsheets aren’t your thing we’ve also got our impressions of the Boxee Box Live TV dongle and advice ahead of Super Bowl XLVI this weekend

Sky will launch an internet based TV service in the UK in the first half of 2012

UK pay TV service Sky has just announced its quarterly results, and despite adding 100,000 subscribers as well as notching its “highest ever first-half adjusted operating profit” it will launch a new internet TV service, available to anyone in the country with a broadband connection. Sky describes the new service as being aimed at the 13 million UK households who don’t currently subscribe to pay TV, with access available via “PC, laptop, tablet, smartphone, games console or connected TV.” Initially, the service will offer Sky Movies on demand joined by sports and entertainment options later, with access based on either monthly unlimited subscription or “pay-as-you-go” pricing. As far as the company’s basic services, it will continue to develop its existing Sky Go product for standard pay-TV subscribers and zeebox iPad companion app , although this seems to initially be a worth competitor for things like Lovefilm and recent UK entrant Netflix .

Netflix Decides to Ditch Video Game Rentals

Oh come on! The best part about the mess that was Qwikster was the possibility of renting games from Netflix. Now they take that away from us too? That new season of Arrested Development better be amazing

PlayStation Vita gets updated 3G data plan, offers an extra gigabyte for a Lincoln

We can’t say we were overly concerned about busting through the Vita’s 2GB monthly data threshold when the handheld’s 3G variant hits AT&T next month, but the network, it seems, isn’t taking any chances. According to the Vita’s AT&T page, Ma Bell’s making sure you’ll never be blocked from nabbing those download-capped PlayStation Minis by upping the previously announced 2GB for $25 plan to 3GB for $30. Surprised

Considering how 2011 progressed for Netflix , it’s not entirely surprising to hear some changes are in store at the top when it comes to marketing and communications.

Lovefilm Instant UK lands on LG Smart TVs, shrinks postmen’s movie collection

As the streaming TV wars hot up in the UK, Lovefilm is steadily strengthening its arsenal : its Instant streaming service is already available on 175 devices, and now you can add LG’s April-2011-onwards Smart TVs to that list. Despite the Korean tellies already having over 250 apps, Lovefilm claims its software is the first for streaming movies and TV; and if that’s not good enough for you, it even works with LG’s Magic Motion remote
