Philly newsies to offer Archos Arnova 10 G2 tablet for $99 with subscription bundle

Taking a cue from other publications pushing tablet content, two major Philadelphia newspapers are offering discounted subscriptions bundled with a discounted device to read it on — the Android-based Arnova 10 G2. The Philadelphia Media Network and Arnova will offer the tablet for $99 when purchased with a two-year digital subscription to The Philadelphia Inquirer and Daily News for $9.99 a month, or $129 for the year. That tally is substantially lower than the HK $1,680 (around $250) mark that the slate alone hit when it launched last month , but it’s not apt to attract too much attention outside of Brotherly Love’s favorite locale

Philly papers to offer subscribers discounted Android tablets that make terrible birdcage lining (video)

As the internet has overtaken newspapers as an information source, convincing readers to shell out the dough for online news has proven an uphill battle . Now two papers are trying a new approach: entice customers with discounted Android tablets and pre-loaded content apps. The Philadelphia Media Network, which owns the Philadelphia Inquirer and the Philadelphia Daily News , is planning a pilot program for mid-August which will offer around 2,000 tablets; if successful, it could expand to more readers.

It looks like Comcast’s trial bubble has been something of a success, and now the company is announcing that its Xfinity Home Security Service will be branching out beyond Houston to arm alarms, dim lamps and keep home automation freaks appraised of sports scores in an additional six markets (including Philadelphia, Portland, Jacksonville, Sarasota/Naples, Chattanooga and Nashville).

SXSW 2011: SCVNGR’s Seth Priebatsch on how gaming will change the world

The creator of the business location tool on ‘gamefication’, Facebook and how game dynamics can help solve real problems Seth Priebatsch unleashed 180 seconds of organised chaos on SXSW Interactive on Saturday, turning the 4,000-strong audience into a giant trading pit. The charismatic, high-speed founder of business location tool SCVNGR wanted to show how game dynamics – in this case based on the classic card game Pit – can help solve real problems, giving everyone in the audience a coloured card to trade as a metaphor for organising action around climate change. It’s all part of his vision for the next generation of the web, one he describes as “the game layer”

StreamTV Elocity A7 tablet packs Tegra 2 and Android 2.2, coming to Amazon for $399 in September

We can’t say we’d ever heard of StreamTV, but all the company had to say was ” Tegra 2 Android Froyo tablet” to get us to meet up with them in NYC earlier today. The Philadelphia start-up is planning to bring its Elocity A7 — essentially a re-badged Compal’s NAZ-10 — to an Amazon order page near you, and from what we saw during the hour-long demo it may just be a contender for your stashed away $399.

Philly blog tax: reality or rumour?

Claims that Philadelphia authorities are charging bloggers a fee have caused a media furore – but they’re simply not true Churnalism travels fast, especially in silly season. Verizon’s LTE network launching November 15 with two data cards and over 30 markets?

We’re being fed some information on Verizon’s launch strategy for its first commercial 4G markets today; the bad news is that it’s looking like you’ll have to wait until the holiday shopping season, but the good news is that they should have a surprisingly decent footprint at launch. Specifically, we’re hearing that two data cards (presumably including that LG VL600 USB stick ) will kick things off on November 15 with over 30 markets around the country — including biggies like New York, LA, Chicago, and Philadelphia — alongside ten airports, perfect for you globetrotters on layovers
