DARPA’s Dr. Frankenllite could plunder space graves, create orbital abominations (video)

There are countless satellites, long deactivated, orbiting the Earth in what amounts to a giant cemetery in the sky. DARPA’s Phoenix program sees these piles of junk not as refuse, but as a resource just waiting to be harvested. The plan is to re-engineer existing technology, like robots used in remote surgery and advanced imaging systems found in off-shore drilling platforms, for the harsh environment of space

Verizon flips the switch on 28 new LTE markets, Louisville Sluggers now available with 4G

3G wireless is now less a privilege than a right, and and with any luck our 4G networks will be similarly self-evident soon. Verizon is doing its part, flipping the switch on 28 new LTE markets today. This boosts the total number of covered areas to 102

Blast at Intel’s Arizona plant injures seven, investigation under way

Yesterday afternoon, a blast occurred at Intel’s Arizona plant just outside Phoenix, injuring seven people with one suffering from severe burns. According to Phoenix Business Journal , the incident took place in a solvent waste treatment room at Fab 22 — not far from Fab 32 which will be manufacturing 22nm chips — but Intel Vice President Josh Walden assured us that “there was no damage or release of chemicals to the community,” and production has already resumed in both facilities

LightSquared says it has signed up five companies for its wholesale LTE service

LightSquared has faced something of an uphill battle in getting its wholesale 4G LTE network off the ground — even including accusations that it’s a threat to national security — but it looks like it’s having fairly good luck attracting some customers. According to Chief Marketing Officer Frank Boulben, LightSquared has signed agreements with five companies so far, including two carriers, one website, a national retailer, and a device manufacturer — none of which it’s able to name, of course.

Record number of aircraft ‘laser events’ gives us one more reason to hate LA

Are you that kid aiming his father’s laser pointer at people walking along city sidewalks? Yeah, well stop it — now.

Clear bullish on LTE trial results, says WiMAX is ‘best for the customer’ right now

Clearwire’s talking more about some of the glorious numbers it’s seeing as it drives around the greater Phoenix area testing its trial LTE network, and we think one specific quote pretty much sums it up: “this isn’t your grandfather’s LTE.” That statement was made in comparing Clearwire’s results — bumping up against 90Mbps in some configurations — to the 5 to 12Mbps that Verizon is quoting for its first-gen commercial LTE network, though they’re quick to note in the same breath that Clear’s test is on an unloaded network without a deluge of users all trying to stream professional sports games in HD at the same time.
