Daily Report: Safety Board Urges Cellphone Ban for Drivers

A proposed ban on any cellphone use while driving is noteworthy because it is the first call by a federal agency to end the practice completely, rather than the partial ban that some legislators have put in place by allowing hands-free talking.

Google responds: Bing recycles search results, and we’d like it to stop

Google accused Microsoft of copying search results this morning, and the company’s sticking to its guns: in response to Microsoft’s firm denial — “We do not copy Google’s results” — it’s released another tiny batch of evidence to the contrary and a call for Microsoft to discontinue the practice for good. Mind you, Google search engineer Amit Singhal doesn’t explicitly call out its competitor for “copying” results — rather, “recycling” them through a clever combination of Microsoft Internet Explorer and the Bing Toolbar — but the message is clear.

Watch Pro Bowl practice through Michael Vick’s eyes — and his ContourHD 1080p helmet cam

This weekend’s NFL Pro Bowl might be one of the more useless spectacles in American sport, but since there’s nothing at stake, the NFC coaches allowed Michael Vick to strap a ContourHD 1080p camera to his helmet during practice — and the resulting few moments of footage are pretty awesome, if you’re a football fan. We gave the 1080p a pretty decent review , and it certainly delivers here: you get to watch Vick break the huddle, fire off a pass to Jason Witten, hand off to Adrian Peterson, and run a play-action to Witten, all the while exchanging some friendly banter with Matt Ryan and Drew Brees.

Google’s wardriving days are over, says Canadian privacy commissioner

When Google’s Street View cars glide through your neighborhood next, you can leave the WPA2 encryption off — Canada says that the company has “discontinued” the practice of snooping on unsecured WiFi networks with its mapping vehicles, and “has no plans to resume it.” That’s one of several findings in a report by Canada’s privacy commissioner today, which also claims that the controversial data collection feature was the work of a single Google engineer, and that Google intends to use smartphones to pinpoint WiFi networks from now on. Naturally, the latter caused the commissioner concern that Android phones might capture the same data as the cars. Perhaps you’d best keep those shields up after all.
