LG’s Magic Remote is powered by Nuance

It was Monday morning at CES when LG unveiled its Magic Remote : a television zapper that recognized Wii-style motion control and voice recognition — stripping out the fiddly array of buttons that most TiVo users are familiar with . Nuance, of Dragon Dictation fame, got all excited and lifted the lid on which company’s voice recognition technology was powering the unit (hint: it’s Nuance). Thanks to the handy press release after the break, we’ve learnt that if you bellow “Lady Gaga” into the unit, it’ll return materials related to Ms Germanotta herself — although if you’ve seen Jack Donaghy’s voice-activated TV from 30 Rock , you might not be too convinced that you can kiss goodbye to buttons just yet.

LG Google TV and Magic Remote Qwerty hands-on

While Samsung waits to debut its take on the Google TV platform, LG is already showing off its hardware, including a new remote control. For LG’s part, it has decided to blend the QWERTY needs of a Google TV controller with its existing Magic Motion remote gesture control and scroll wheel technology. The result is a decently well balanced dual-sided remote with relatively simple controls.

Sony’s second try at Google TV brings Blu-ray player, streaming box and a new remote

Interestingly, despite a Sony execs saying that its Google TV model was meeting sales expectations , for the second round it’s focusing on two add-on boxes. The NSZ-GP9 Blu-ray player and NSZ-GS7 network media player (pictured above) will ship in North America and Europe in early summer, and are expect to roll out in other regions afterwards as Google TV expands its reach. Common to both boxes is a completely reimagined remote, featuring a backlit QWERTY keyboard, touchpad and motion control for gaming.

Parrot launching new AR.Drone2.0 at CES?

We happened upon Parrot’s outdoor AR.Drone corral at CES and this signage immediately caught our eyes. Parrot AR.Drone2.0 Fly – Record – Share: is this an all-new device or a firmware bump that adds some new functionality? The social media aspect of the poster is pretty self evident — and might be accomplished with a device firmware upgrade — but we’re kind of hoping for a new Drone with better cameras, speed, battery life, and while we’re listing things, a dedicated remote control wouldn’t hurt a bit.

Dijit launches remote control app for iPad, gives you something to do during all that boring TV watching

If all those TV shows haven’t completely eroded your short term memory, you may recall the time we spent with Dijit’s remote control app , way back in early December. The company tells us that it’s finally ready for prime time, taking advantage of the extra screen real estate the Apple tablet has to offer

Tizi app turns your iPhone into a pricey iPad remote, enlists Siri for channel surfing

It’s time to show your iPad who’s boss — your iPhone, naturally. The Tizi Remote app is presently available for free via iTunes, letting you use your iPhone to change channels, record shows and pause live TV on iPads connected to the Tizi or Tizi Go TV receivers — and if you happen to have a 4S , you can harness the power of Siri to change channels for you

Roku’s official iPhone remote app is available, has gesture control and channel selection for all

Directly on the heels of an update for its newest media streamers , Roku has released its official iPhone remote app. Apparently “inspired by user feedback”, it allows users to launch or rate channels, control the box with touches and swipes, and add or remove channels from their box directly from the app itself.

Belkin preps LiveAction camera remote for your iPhone

Look past the typical FCC dowdiness and you’ll notice a Belkin-made remote shutter release for the iPhone. We have no notion of price or availability, but the regulatory paperwork does at least reveal how it works: the controller triggers still or video recording via Bluetooth and the accompanying LiveAction app, and it also houses a detachable stand for propping your phone up on a “variety of surfaces.” Stop-motion shenanigans spring to mind, but the more obvious use is for group photos — and you might consider pairing it with one of these to avoid cropping heads

Mix Master Gloves keep your hands warm, control your iPod. Q-bert mitts still MIA (video)

There’s plenty of options for keeping your digits toasty while you peruse the music on your iPhone or iPod, but most of those still require you to fish the device out of your pocket to skip that Audioslave track that sneaked on there. Burton’s Mix Master gloves skip all that physical interaction nonsense by sticking a wireless remote in the back of one of the mitts. You just plug a small dongle into your iDevice and it pairs up with the music-controlling hand-wear
