Italian anti-trust body fines Apple for misleading customers on product guarantees

Apple Italia has been fined a total of 900,000 euros for failing to inform its customers that products purchased were already covered by two years of free assistance under national law. It appears that Apple employees encouraged the extra purchase of its own AppleCare plans. With the European court’s continued investigation of possible e-book price-fixing and ongoing legal jousting with Samsung unlikely to end any time soon, it looks like Apple will be busy in the courts next year too

Apple offers free repairs for iPhones, other products damaged in Japan quake

Apple customers with Macs, displays, and iOS devices that were directly damaged in the Japan earthquake and tsunami may be eligible for free repairs. The offer, posted on the company’s Japanese website, excludes iPod classic, nano, and shuffle, and only applies to customers living in areas covered by the Ministry of Health’s Disaster Relief Act. Originally posted in March, Apple’s announcement joins Softbank’s offer to replace lost iPhones registered to its network, and free calls to Japan from U.S.

PSA: Notion Ink Adam can be unbricked, and here’s the 80MB fix

There were tears of joy at the Notion Ink Adam launch, but also tears of shame, as owners of the long-awaited Pixel Qi tablet who downloaded the very first OTA update had their slate brutally bricked . Thankfully, the Notion Ink team appears to have issued a speedy fix, as you can download the ROM directly from the company’s website and flash it the comfort of your own home. Assuming you’ve got a Windows or Linux PC handy, it’s only an 80MB download away, and you’ll find file links and a detailed set of instructions right after the break

Apple issuing free repairs or replacements of wonky 2008 Time Capsules

It takes quite a lot to get Apple (or any of the other big timers) to swallow its pride and admit a faulty product, but the random deaths of its Time Capsules seem to have fit that bill. Of course, in classic corporate fashion, we’re not told that there’s a problem at all, but if you bought one of the earliest batches of Time Capsules — between February and June 2008 — and it has since suffered a fatal malfunction, you may now be entitled to a free repair or replacement. This new coverage is also being extended to people who’ve already had to pay to deal with a less than reliable Capsule; they’ll get full refunds of their money, but we doubt their hearts will heal that quickly, and let’s not even talk about the lost data that was supposed to be getting backed up on the thing
