Redbox refuses to push Warner movie delay to 56 days, will rent flicks as they go on sale

Two years after bending to Warner’s demands and delaying its kiosk rentals 28 days in exchange for lower acquisition costs and a steady supply of Blu-ray discs, Redbox announced the agreement has expired. This comes as a result of Warner’s desire to extend the delay between the time movies are available for purchase to the time they can be rented in kiosks or by subscription to 56 days , and instead Redbox will go back to buying the studio’s movies at retail — coincidentally, it has renewed its lease agreement with Walmart for 3,700 retail locations for three more years. While that means more expense and possibly unsure supply for Redbox — we’ll wait and see if retailer interference is an issue again — the good news for consumers is that for the time being, they’ll have the choice of renting as soon as movies go on sale

Barnes & Noble to pull Amazon Publishing titles from shelves over exclusivity concerns

Barnes & Noble bans aren’t just for superheroes anymore . The bookseller let it be known this week that it will be pulling Amazon Publishing titles from the shelves of its 700-odd retail locations, in protest of exclusivity deals struck by the mega-online retailer. As one B&N exec told The New York Times , “Our decision is based on Amazon’s continued push for exclusivity with publishers, agents and the authors they represent,” adding, “Their actions have undermined the industry as a whole and have prevented millions of customers from having access to content.” Barnes & Noble will apparently continue to sell some Amazon titles through its own site, but good luck using its WiFi .

Apple hires former Dixons CEO John Browett as senior VP of Retail

More than six months after Ron Johnson’s departure , Apple has finally found a new retail chief to replace him, in one John Browett. The Cambridge- and Wharton-educated Browett will be coming to Cupertino in April after serving nearly five years as CEO of Dixons — the Taj Mahal of British retail. Before that, he held a smattering of obscurely defined “executive positions” at Tesco plc and advised retail clients at Boston Consulting Group

Bridgestone rolls with air-free tire concept (video)

The days of flat tires and spares are numbered. Sure, self-inflating tires are all well and good, but don’t protect from the darn puncture itself.

Telstra opens ‘Androidland’ store in Australia with a little help from Google

No, that’s not the latest addition to Google’s Mountain View campus. That is Telstra’s brand new Androidland store, which has just opened its doors in Melbourne, Australia. The store was built with some degree of co-operation from both Google and Android handset makers (including Google-trained experts that are available to help customers), and it offers a whole range of different Android products for sale, along with other Google-related attractions like a giant, multi-screen display for exploring Google Earth.

Nokia links up with Bluetooth 4.0 for indoor positioning, because anything Google can do, it can do better

Not to be outdone by the mobile mammoth that is Google , Nokia’s prepping its own version of indoor maps for wireless users. Rather than run the risk of being a me too! product, Espoo’s Research labs have chosen Bluetooth 4.0 as the main ingredient for its in development location service. The Finnish company’s hoping to get a slew of partners onboard so it can begin outfitting retail shops, malls and other well-trodden public spaces with inexpensive antenna arrays that would track a user’s movements via device-embedded Bluetooth tags.
