Second Sight retinal prosthesis cleared for sale in Europe, a better one already in development

We’d bother with the obvious, but there’s no sense in acting exasperated that this thing is finally shipping — let’s just be glad it didn’t take a day longer, shall we? Second Sight, a California-based company aiming to help those with degenerative eye disease by way of technology, has finally seen its flagship product approved for “clinical and commercial use” in Europe. The product is the Argus II, and for all intents and purposes, it’s a retinal prosthesis (read: implant) that can at least partially restore lost vision

iPad 2 Retina Display evidence mounts, this time a .png of wood is to blame

So, we heard from our source that the iPad 2 would have a “super high resolution” Retina Display , we heard from AppleInsider that the iPad 2 is getting around 4X the graphics performance of the iPad, and of course there’s the fact that the iPhone 4′s Retina Display offered a pretty impressively painless upgrade path for developers — an iPad 2 with a 2048 x 1536 screen is starting to sound less and less like the crazy dream of naive fanboys. But wait, there’s more! A .png has been found in the iBooks 1.2 source files, dubbed Wood Tile@2x.png. It’s sized at 1536 x 800, while the old and busted Wood Tile.png in iBooks 1.1 was 768 x 400 — that’s 2X in each direction, or 4X the pixels, for anyone who’s counting

Epic Games, Id Software show off jaw-dropping new iPhone games

We’ve already seen Epic Games and Id Software show off their respective game engines for iOS devices, but they’re only now finally giving folks a look at the first actual games that will use them. The first of those to roll out will apparently be Id’s Mutant Bash TV , which looks as impressive as the Rage demo promised (although that’s aided in part by being on rails), and will cost just $0.99 for the standard version or $1.99 for the Retina Display-enhanced version

Apple Remote app 2.0 adds support for new Apple TV, iPad

No surprises here, but Apple’s just released version 2.0 of the Remote app for iPhone and iPad, which adds in support for the new iOS-based Apple TV in addition to iTunes on OS X. The interface is mostly the same — a trackpad-like screen for ATV remote control and an iPod-like interface for more direct media playback — but it’s now optimized for the Retina display on the iPhone 4 and the larger screen size of the iPad. Since the new Apple TV is streaming-only, Remote also now has better support for controlling shared music libraries, making remote control of iTunes on your HTPC slightly easier as well

Google Earth 3.1 for iOS gets its ocean layer, Eric Schmidt’s undersea base conspicuously absent

Google’s recent addition of ocean layer content and ocean bathymetry (which, we were shocked to discover, had nothing to do with bathing) meant that Android users finally got access to underwater locales on the Google Earth . No need to feel left out anymore, iOS users — Google Earth 3.1 for iPod Touch, iPad and the iPhone is finally yours as well, with over a hundred pictures and videos and native support for the Retina display. Check out the App Store to get started, or (if it’s your wont) simply snap the QR code after the break
