Refining the digital newspaper model

Many questioned my model for digital newspapers. Here’s a few helpful answers Let’s come back to the business model question. My 15 January column featuring a simple model for digital newspapers triggered a number of emails and comments, many questioning my assumptions (my thanks to readers of the Monday Note who take the time to make insightful contributions to the discussion)

Student-friendly Lenovo ThinkPad X130e available now for $429

The last time we heard about the inexpensive and student-friendly ThinkPad X130e, it was being snatched up by the eager school districts . That move ultimately pushed back the rig’s planned ship date, but fortunately Lenovo seems to have caught up with the demand for its rugged miniature. In case you need a mind refresh, the X130e is sporting an 11.6-inch HD LED display, 250GB for all your storage needs, four gigs of RAM and your choice of an AMD Fusion or i3 processor at its Core (see what we did there?), just to mention a few goodies

Apple’s education announcement: what you need to know

Today’s education event was a reasonably small one, so far as Apple pressers go, held at the Guggenheim museum in New York City, with a smattering of media representatives in attendance. It arrives on the tails of some already hearty numbers for the company, including the existence of 20,000 learning-themed apps and 1.5 million iPads currently in use for education. But Cupertino’s plans for the future of learning are grand indeed, including the desire to “reinvent the textbook” via iBooks 2

NYC opening its first public high school dedicated to software engineering

There are plenty of specialized public high schools in New York City and in September of 2012 that roster of educational institutions will grow by one more when the Academy for Software Engineering opens its doors. The school will greet its first class of incoming freshman at the beginning of the next school year and become the first NYC public school dedicated to pumping out programers. Beyond filling our desperate need for more engineers the school will be special in several respects

Apple promises ‘education announcement’ in New York on January 19th

We’d heard it was coming, and for the second year in a row, Apple has disrupted the natural flow of CES by announcing an event of its own . Granted, this one — slated to be held January 19th at the Guggenheim Museum — is packing far fewer implications than the Verizon iPhone event of 2011, but suffice it to say, anyone who enjoys “learning” should be tuning in later this month. If you’ll recall, it was reported by TechCrunch that the event would be entirely related to publishing, with no new hardware on tap; Fox’s own Clayton Morris followed up to say that it’d have something to do with iTunes

Lenovo ThinkPad X130e delayed until February, early-adopting school districts to blame

We’ll be honest: when Lenovo said it would ship the new student-friendly ThinkPad X130e starting on December 20th, we didn’t actually program an alert in our calendars, reminding us to place our orders on the very first day it became available. But it looks like at least a few you did just that, and were quite taken with this durable 11.6-inch laptop. As it turns out, though, you’ll have to wait a little longer to get yours — Lenovo’s product page is now saying it won’t be available for individual purchase until February.

Crapgadget: BFF Gemz dilute the notion of a best friend (video)

If you want a charm that hangs ’round your neck and glows whenever your friend Missy tells you she loves Justin Bieber , then eMotion Inc has the gadget for you. The BFF Gemz sends pre-written coded messages to pals up to 450 feet away, which they can access the next time they’re at a computer. You can add up to eight best friends (the BFF currency devalued to Weimar proportions) and four more if you buy some GPA: Girl Power Average points
