Sony VAIO series get minor processor refresh, Z series grabs LTE option on the way

Ahead of any possible Ultrabook announcements, Sony’s looking to give its existing VAIO catalogue a (relatively underwhelming) shot in the arm with a bundle of hardware retweaks. The Z series looks to gain the most out of the Spring refresh, with a new off-white Carbon Fiber Silver color option set to be offered up alongside an optional LTE modem. The series also gets a processor step-up, with new Intel Core i5 and i7 options rounded off with the choice of SSD storage

Fujifilm FinePix XP30 hands-on: a week of underwater testing (video)

One thing’s for sure: we’re utterly thrilled with the direction that ruggedized cameras are heading. Canon’s PowerShot D10, while impressive, was more like a small stone than a bona fide P&S, but it wouldn’t take much convincing to make someone believe that Fujifilm’s FinePix XP30 was just another run-of-the-mill compact

Samsung Series 5 Chromebook now shipping in Arctic White — Titan Silver edition still to come

We already knew it was coming — Samsung hasn’t been particularly shy about its teasing — but the big day has finally arrived, and the Series 5 Chromebook is now officially shipping to those eagerly awaiting the Google-powered laptop. If you weren’t among the high-end coupon clippers who snatched one up during the surprise sale at Gilt a couple of weeks ago, you can now pick up a Chromebook of your own. At least for now, however, it looks like you’ll have to settle for a white exterior — the “Ttian Silver” (also known as black) edition is still in pre-order mode at both Best Buy and Amazon

Microsoft’s acquisition of Skype for $8.5 billion becomes official

It was pretty much known about since last night, but Microsoft and Skype have now obliterated any lingering doubt in the matter: the Redmond-based software giant will acquire the internet telephony company for a cool $8.5 billion in cash.

MSI rolls out Core i3-based CX640, CR640 laptops

MSI’s already had a fairly productive month when it comes to new laptops, but it’s not done quite yet — the company has now also rolled out its new 15.6-inch CX640 and CR640 models, which each boast what MSI calls a “clutter free design,” as well as some budget-friendly prices. As for specs, both pack an Intel Core i3-2310M processor, 4GB of RAM and a 500GB hard drive (not to mention two USB 3.0 ports), while the silver CX640 upgrades things from the basic integrated Intel HD 3000 graphics on the black CR640 model to NVIDIA’s GeForce GT 520M with Optimus technology. Sound like the mid-range laptop you’ve been waiting for

New silver-packing transparent conductive film could mean more durable touchscreens

We first heard of the wonders of silver ink back in 2009, but it wasn’t until earlier this year, with talk of 3M’s new capacitive touchscreens , that we experienced its real-world potential for display technology. Well, it looks like 3M’s not the only name in the Ag game, in fact Tokyo-based Toray Industries recently announced the development of a transparent conductive film that ditches the traditional ITO (indium tin oxide) for silver wire
