Brazil wants to build South American broadband network, says it will bring down costs

A pan-South American broadband network: It sounds rather ambitious, but that’s exactly what Brazil proposed yesterday, during a meeting of the continent’s communications ministers. In an address to his colleagues, Brazil’s Paulo Bernardo called for the creation of “a ring of South American fiber optic networks” encompassing the entire continent. This “South American solution,” he added, would lower the costs of internet and mobile access across the region, benefiting consumers and ISPs alike

OSCar eO build finally finished, electric offroader prepares for the mountains of South America

It’s been a few months since we first heard about OSCar eO and its plans to tackle the (arguably) most difficult task in motorsport: make it from the start of the Dakar Rally to the finish. Well, the race starts in about a month and a half, and the Latvian team building the rugged EV has finally finished its arduous task. Aside from countless welds to create a formidable frame, there was also plenty of wiring and programming involved in getting the range-extended EV ready for the coming off-road battle

LG P430 and P530 Blade laptops bedazzle with slim bezels, aluminum bodies, and Core i7

We heard of a bezel-hating LG Shuriken display sneaking its way onto Acer laptops recently, but the Korean company has wisely opted to debut that cutting-edge technology in its own portable computers first. The 14-inch P430 and 15.6-inch P530 mark the start of its new Blade series of laptops, which are the result of some obsessive slimming work at the LG labs — display thickness is 4.5mm and 4.7mm, respectively, while the bezel on the 14-inch model is so narrow as to fit its screen within the dimensions of a traditional 13.3-inch laptop.

Visualized: Facebook’s global reach

If you’ve ever wondered what a map drawn entirely of Facebook relationships would look like, wonder no more. A Facebook intern by the name of Paul Butler has put together the above image by feeding in location data for pairs of friends, with the white lights representing cities, towns, and hamlets, and the blue streaks between them identifying relationships linking them. It’s fun to see large swathes of Australia and South America devoid of Facebook activity, but check out the bit on the map where Russia and China are supposed to be — is Facebook the most capitalist social network ever or what?

Racing Green Endurance team completes its 16,000 mile, electric Pan-American trip (video)

Hey, remember the crazy Imperial College kids in the Racing Green Endurance team, the ones who took a perfectly wonderful Radical racer and stripped it of its internal-combustion assets, flew it to Alaska, and then pledged to drive it all the way down the Pan-American Highway?
