New York Times envisions Microsoft Surface kitchen table, just don’t spill your OJ (video)

Long since gone are the days of sitting at the breakfast table, drinking a cup of coffee and sharing the Sunday paper… or are they?

Hurricane Irene Mostly a Storm of Hype

As denizens of the East Coast emerge from their storm shelters and temporary Starbucks bunkers in Manhattan, they were greeted with a scene of such utter, well, vanilla that many were no doubt wondering, as we were, “That was it?” More

Galaxy Tab 10.1 update coming soon, ushers TouchWiz into the Honeycomb era

That ” future software upgrade ” Samsung promised us for the Galaxy Tab 10.1 is “coming soon” according to the company’s site, though, when exactly “soon” might be is anyone’s guess. When it does start trickling its way on to Sammy’s slate, it’ll be bringing with it a host of new features, including that Honeycomb edition of TouchWiz that’s sure to be just as divisive as its smartphone ancestor. It does, however, pack in some nice functionality, like a multimedia clipboard for copying and pasting pictures and videos as well as text, and a Live Panel widget for pulling in news, weather, and updates from your social networks

This Robot Hand-Pours Coffee Better Than Most Humans [Video]

The nerd-standard in your average nerdy coffee shop is regular coffee, brewed by hand . A pourover: A barista slowly whirls a kettle over a Hario V60 cone or a Chemex , in neatly orchestrated concentric circles. I’ve had some amazing pourovers, but I’d had even more shitty ones.

Interactive storefront displays show up at Canadian Starbucks, window licking discouraged

Starbucks has given the caffeinated crowd a new reason, other than the free WiFi , to stop by a couple of locations in Toronto and Vancouver — interactive window displays! Taking sidewalk passers-by on a journey to assemble their favorite Tazo teas, the interactivity comes via a vinyl screen, projector, and gesture controls.

Starbucks lets you pay for that Trenta with the iPhone in your shaking, overcaffeinated hands

Expanding a trial that had already been underway in a few markets, Starbucks is now rolling out its Starbucks Card mobile app nationally with payment capability built-in, meaning you needn’t reach into your wallet, pocketbook, or purse just because you’re jonesing for that midday caffeine fix. Instead, you can fire up the app — which supports the iPhone, iPod touch, and a number of BlackBerry models — and hold up a barcode on the screen to a scanner in the store, at which point monies will be automagically deducted from your Starbucks Card account and transferred back to the mothership in exchange for high-octane brew.

Mount Everest now ‘wired’ for Internet, ready for Starbucks

TeliaSonera subsidiary Ncell has just completed installation of a 3G base station at 5,200 meters (17,000 feet) that will reach the 8,848-meter peak of Mount Everest. Mind you, we’ve already seen a cellphone call made from the world’s highest peak using a temporary base station in a Motorola publicity stunt.

Apple fixes FaceTime for Mac security flaw, not your Wolverine complex

That was quick. The FaceTime for Mac beta security flaw has been shutdown by Apple on the backend — a flaw that allowed anyone with physical access to your machine to reset and grab your iTunes Store account password and security answers. So now, if some nefarious type were to click “View Account” within your FaceTime desktop app while you were chillin’ in the Starbucks toilet or chatting away the day by the office water cooler, the would-be identify thief would simply be redirected back to the FaceTime Account Preferences pane.
