Seagate expects flood-related hard drive shortages to continue

Seagate took some time out from its busy earnings reporting schedule to address supply concerns stemming from the recent devastating floods in Thailand. The storage manufacturer announced that hard drives supply will likely fall 150 million units short of demand by year’s end. While Seagate’s own factories weren’t directly hit, suppliers for the company were impacted — as were competitors, like Western Digital.

Griffin PowerBlock Reserve hands-on (video)

Griffin’s PowerBlock reserve is a 2000mA battery that’s packing a power plug on one end and a USB port on the other, designed for weary travelers who need to get some more juice from their smartphone. If we’re honest, it looks like an enormous chocolate bar, but the sort of not-delicious sort that’ll push your iPhone’s battery back to 80 percent from cold on a full charge. It’ll cost you $59.99 for a version that comes with an USB to Apple connector cable or $49.99 if you’d rather supply your own

Hard Drive Shortages Lead to Higher Prices-And SSDs in the Cloud?

The recent flooding reported in Thailand is definitely going to impact the computer hard drive supply for at least the next six months, with Western Digital reporting that as much as a fifty percent reduction in production.  Western Digital’s main facility is mostly under water, and precision tools and clean rooms do not respond well to large quantities of muddy water.

MacBook in short supply, stirs rumors of imminent refresh, rebirth of white plastic?

We’ve already seen the MacBook Pro sporting new specs, and heard rumblings of a MacBook Air refresh coming soon, and now reports of dwindling supplies of Apple’s great white hope have the internets abuzz over a possible MacBook upgrade. AppleInsider did a little digging earlier today, and found that major online retailers, including Amazon, and at least one brick and mortar store were either running low or completely out of the last of the MacBooks. A similar fate has befallen stock of the Mac mini, inviting speculation that both machines will likely pop up post-Lion

Samsung’s new AMOLED production line should help ease smartphone display shortages

AMOLED displays may be in relatively short supply nowadays, but Samsung is doing its best to bridge the gap. Today, the company’s Mobile Display unit announced that its 5.5th-generation AMOLED production line is now open, some two months ahead of schedule. The line uses glass substrates that are substantially larger than those found in its existing factories, allowing Samsung to increase output, while lowering costs

Confirmed: Tegra 2-equipped Samsung Galaxy S II is coming

We’ve confirmed with our own sources what was almost an established fact already: there will be a version of Samsung’s 4.3-inch Galaxy S II Android smartphone relying on a dual-core Tegra 2 chip for its processing. The second-gen Galaxy S launched at MWC this year with Samsung’s own Exynos dual-core solution at its heart, but it seems that yields of that chip haven’t been good enough to sate the expected high demand for the handset. So, in steps NVIDIA with its soon-to-be-ubiquitous Tegra 2 — which runs at the same 1GHz as Exynos and offers comparable performance — to fill in the supply gap

Apple creating touch panel shortages for tablet competition?

Things tend to get messy for the competition when Apple decides to direct its vast cash reserves on ” very strategic ” components. Especially when Cupertino starts waving around stacks of dough in the range of $3.9 billion to $7.8 billion
