Sony Vaio Z gets the in-house teardown treatment (video)

Another official teardown, another predictable revelation: the new Sony Vaio Z ‘s viscera are thinner, flatter and, er, more compressed than those of its predecessor. But at least this dissection is performed by an actual Vaio engineer who ought to know his stuff. In the video after the break, Shinji Oguchi explains how cooling was improved using a range of tricks, like aerating the laptop’s guts via holes in the keyboard.

Samsung Galaxy S II gets torn down, found to be just as beautiful on the inside

Here’s a tidbit of interest: it took the moving of three million Galaxy S IIs before we saw a bona fide teardown. But hey — maybe this thing’s just too darn delightful to crack open for the sake of cracking it open. iFixit and ABI Research have both sliced into Sammy’s best smartphone yet, discovering an Exynos dual-core apps processor, newfangled CMOS-based antenna switch, a low-power XMM6260 cellular chipset from Infineon and a single-packaged multi-band, multi-mode PA from RFMD

The under-appreciated hard drive gets torn apart and explained (video)

We don’t know about you, but we generally don’t give much thought to our hard drives or how they work. And that’s a shame because, as you’ll find out in the video after the break, they’re veritable miracles of modern science. Bill Hammack, also known as Engineer Guy , takes us on a detailed tour of the inner workings of the ubiquitous hard disk drive — from the Lorentz Force driven arm, to the head that floats a mere 10nm above the layered cobalt platters thanks to the wonders of aerodynamics

Nexus S torn asunder, its curves laid out on display

You’ve already seen ninjas take on the Nexus S box, now see the device laid out component-by-component, thrashed by some sick and twisted individual. Nothing too crazy to see here, except perhaps the awesome curves of the front display laid out (another shot after the break).

Logitech Revue with Google TV torn down, netbook specs found within

There’s a lot we already know about Logitech’s Revue with Google TV , and after our walkthrough on Saturday’s Engadget Show, we also know just how NSFW the search results can be. All jesting aside, we did notice some amount of stuttering during our testing, and now we know why: for all intents and purposes, it’s a netbook.

iFixit celebrates Friday with teardown of Virtual Boy, the greatest game console man has ever known

We still have memories — some would say nightmares, but we digress — of hanging out at a neighbor’s house and taking turns playing matches of Mario’s Tennis , our biological ocular displays assimilated into a rubber mask that engulfed our brains and left us in a permanent state of viewing the world in red wireframe. Crude 3D though it may be, it’s still a part of history we must accept, and if you happen to own a Virtual Boy, we have just two things to say to you. One: we’re insanely jealous.

Samsung Galaxy S gets torn down, looks equally beautiful on the inside (video)

You’ll be hard pressed to find a sane individual who’d argue that Samsung’s Galaxy S isn’t a lust-worthy piece of kit on the outside, and after watching the video past the break, we doubt you’ll get too many takers on proving things unsightly within. Equipped with a Super AMOLED display and a bit of that Hummingbird goodness within, there weren’t too many bits and pieces to tear apart. What was found, however, leaves a new appreciation for steady hands

Samsung’s Omnia II gets the video tear down you’ve all been longing for

Samsung’s WinMo 6.5-packin’ Omnia II has been available to Verizon Wireless customers (or at least those unaffected by the Droid) for a few weeks now, but strangely, we’ve yet to see a proper dissection of this here smartphone until today. That said, we’re sure the patience you’ve put into this will pay off after after heading past the break, where all of the itty-bitty internals are shown in stunning detail for your entertainment / education. As a good gal we once knew would say: “Ain’t that the berries!” [Thanks, Costas] Continue reading Samsung’s Omnia II gets the video tear down you’ve all been longing for Samsung’s Omnia II gets the video tear down you’ve all been longing for originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 22 Dec 2009 08:19:00 EST.
