CyanogenMod 9 may feature a 4G LTE toggle switch for the Verizon Galaxy Nexus

We were slightly disappointed when we discovered the Verizon-branded Samsung Galaxy Nexus didn’t come with an easily-accessible LTE toggle switch, but we had a feeling it wouldn’t be long before the development community came in with an acceptable solution.

WordPress 3.3 Release Candidate 3

The third (and hopefully final!) release candidate for WordPress 3.3 is now available. Since RC2, we’ve done  a handful of last-minute tweaks and bugfixes  that we felt were necessary. Our goal is to release version 3.3 early next week, so  plugin and theme authors, this is your last pre-release chance to  test your plugins and themes   to find any compatibility issues before the final release.

Facebook introduces separate Messenger app for iPhone and Android

It’s not clear if its recently acquired group messaging firm, Beluga , had anything to do with it or not, but Facebook has branched out further into the increasingly crowded messaging space today with the announcement of a separate Facebook Messenger app. Available for iPhone and Android, the app lets you send messages directly to individual friends or groups, which they’ll of course receive instantly (a la BBM, Huddle for Google+, and Apple’s forthcoming iMessage). You’re also able to share your location if you choose, and attach photos to your messages, but the app is otherwise streamlined and barebones — which Facebook says is just the point.

Boeing’s biggest jet takes flight, promises lowest ‘seat mile’ cost of any commercial airliner

Boeing took a huge — both literally and figuratively — step in the development of the largest commercial jet in its history when the 747-8 took to the skies for the first time. Granted, the airframe’s cargo version has already logged over 1,600 hours up in the air, but putting the 250-foot passenger plane with a 224-foot wingspan — 19 feet longer and 13 feet wider than the gargantuan 747-400 — through its first few paces without incident is no small feat. The 747-8 borrows some of the 787 Dreamliner’s weight-trimming tech for better fuel efficiency and lower operational costs than older 747s and jumbo jet competition from Airbus

Aldebaran to create all-terrain disaster relief robots, make a hero of Nao?

We’ve seen Nao bust a move and play a little footy , and now its creator is making plans to take its bots off-roading in the name of disaster relief. Aldebaran robotics recently announced its intention to invest in and develop a range of robots that can traverse rocky roads to help in hazardous situations, citing the tsunami in Japan as a catalyst for the move.

Sharp’s Intelligent Power Conditioner works with EVs to make your house a lean, mean, solar-powered machine

So, you’ve got your government-issued solar panels and you bought a plug-in EV , but being both a budget-minded and green-conscious geek, you’re concerned that your home’s power generation and consumption isn’t exactly optimal. Put your worries aside, because Sharp has created the Intelligent Power Conditioner (IPC) to max out the electrical efficiency of your abode while working in conjunction with public utilities.
