Microsoft close to buying Skype for more than $7 billion? (Update: announcement tomorrow)

Following rumors of Facebook and Google eyeing a deal to acquire Skype , we now have a new contender who is none other than the beast from Redmond, Microsoft. According to the Wall Street Journal’s sources, Team Ballmer and the VoIP company are finalizing a negotiation that’s worth more than a whopping $7 billion, and they could be making an announcement as soon as Tuesday. Given that this figure will be a new record for Microsoft in recent years, it’s clear that Ballmer’s very keen on securing this popular voice calling service for his own amusement — perhaps Windows Phone will eventually come with integrated Skype features

HTC Sensation procures online real estate, launches sign-up page

The G2X may be getting all the attention as the current flagship for T-Mobile, but HTC is bound and determined to make sure it doesn’t stay that way for long. Curious souls may be happy to learn that a sign-up page has been set up for the HTC Sensation to update fans on news and announcements. This is a good sign that nary a precious moment of time is being wasted; after all, we’ve got a full six weeks before the heavily-rumored June 8 launch , and there’s an abundance of opportunities for the two companies to get the word out like crazy between now and then.

US Homeland Security Department planning to use Facebook, Twitter for terrorism alerts

It looks like we finally know what the US Department of Homeland Security plans to use instead of the now infamous color-coded terrorism alert system. According to a draft document obtained by the Associated Press , the department’s new system will simply have two levels of alerts — “elevated” and “imminent” — and it seems those warnings will even be published online using Facebook and Twitter “when appropriate.” There’s no word as to exactly how those alerts will be published, however, or any indication that the two companies have actually committed to aiding the department in any way, for that matter. We should know more soon enough, though — the new system is expected to be in place by April 27th.

Intel agrees to pay NVIDIA $1.5b in patent license fees, signs cross-license

Between slagging each other off with cartoons like the one above and taking each other to court over chipset licenses , there’s been no love lost between NVIDIA and Intel over the past few years — but it looks like the war is over. The two companies just announced a new six-year cross-licensing deal that will see Intel paying NVIDIA a total of $1.5b over the next five years for access to NVIDIA’s technology, while also giving NVIDIA a license to some of Intel’s patents. The two companies have also agreed to drop all pending litigation, because you know, they’re now friends who just exchanged a billion and half dollars.

Congratulations, Panasonic , you’re now the adoptive father of two companies, Sanyo and Panasonic Electric Works. We know, the plan’s been all but confirmed since July , but it’s nice to see the deal go through and all the necessary paperwork signed. Both now-wholly-owned subsidiaries (through a share exchange that commenced today) are scheduled to be de-listed from the Tokyo Stock Exchange on March 29th, 2011, and after that…
