Nanotech-enhanced ‘smart paint’ promises to detect structural damage

We’ve seen scientists explore a number of ways to make paint “smarter” over the years, and now a team of researchers at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow have devised a method that they say could do nothing short of “revolutionize structural safety.” The key to that is some novel nanotechnology that effectively turns the paint into a sensor network that’s able to detect minor structural faults before they become a severe problem. More specifically, the paint consists of a mix of highly aligned carbon nanotubes and a recycled waste material known as fly ash — when the nanotubes bend, the conductivity changes, indicating that there could be a structural problem developing. What’s more, the fly ash is also said to give the paint a cement-like structure, which the researchers say could let it be used in harsh conditions where traditional structural monitoring can prove difficult (and expensive)

Researchers at Purdue University have created a pressure sensitive microelectromechanical system (MEMS) that uses sound waves as an energy source. The proof-of-concept has a vibrating cantilever that’s receptive to sound — or music — in the 200 – 500Hz frequency range, which is towards the bottom end of the audible range.

We’ve seen all kinds of medical implants over the years, but none that had a musical preference — until now. Researchers at Purdue University have created a pressure sensitive microelectromechanical system (MEMS) that uses sound waves as an energy source. A facelift for iBooks wasn’t the only change on Apple’s agenda today, as the company’s SVP Eddy Cue has just announced an overhaul of iTunes U. The service, mostly used as a means of delivering lectures to college students, has seen over 700 million downloads since its launch and is now gearing up to offer full online courses from the likes of Duke University, Yale, MIT, amongst others. As an example of this new remote method of learning, the company demoed a Chemistry course at its event, showing an overview, syllabus, credits and even the professor’s office hours

Cyborg cockroaches inch closer to reality, blame science

Few things on this planet are more indestructible than the lowly cockroach — except, of course, a cyborg cockroach. That’s what researchers at Case Western Reserve University are looking to create, and they’re a lot closer than you may think. In fact, chemistry professor Daniel Scherson has found a way to harvest energy from the chemicals swimming within these insidious insects, meaning that they may soon be able to create robot cockroaches with a more reliable power source.
