Must See HDTV (February 6th – 12th)

The Super bowl is over, the ads have aired, and now we’re trying to fill a football-sized hole in our TV schedules. Luckily there’s a few new shows airing that may help us get through the winter, unless of course we get more Glee clones that push us outdoors into the harsh, unforgiving elements. Look below for the highlights this week, followed after the break by our weekly listing of what to look out for in TV, Blu-ray and videogames.

Must See HDTV (November 21st – 27th)

Doctor Who: The Complete Sixth Series Both halves of the most recent edition of Doctor Who come to Blu-ray this week. Throw in the 2010 Christmas Special, a Doctor Who Confidential inside look for each episode, plus a few more exclusives and extras and it’s generally a better option than buying the two parts individually. We’re still not sure exactly where to rank the River Song story arc in the Doctor Who canon, but after long, long teases about what was going on the storyline finally wrapped up in a satisfying way at the end.

DirecTV adds AMC-HD next week, too bad Mad Men is still six months away

After slowing its pace of adding HD channels dramatically as of late, DirecTV has finally satisfied one of the loudest and longest running customer requests by announcing AMC-HD will come to its satellites starting September 9th. There’s still a pretty long list of channels it’s not offering yet, but if you’re on contract and just want to enjoy some Breaking Bad , The Walking Dead and Mad Men (when it returns in March) in HD then today’s Facebook posting (just hours after it was dug up by the satellite sleuths at DBSTalk ) is exactly what you’ve been waiting for

Here’s an amazing story to end your week on a high note: a 25-year-old paraplegic is now walking again, thanks to a groundbreaking procedure developed by neuroscientists at the University of Louisville, UCLA and Cal Tech. The Oregon man, Rob Summers, was paralyzed below the chest in 2006, after getting hit by a speeding car.

HECTOR insect-inspired hexapod walking robot is a smooth operator (video)

We’ve seen some rather nightmare-inducing robots inspired by insects , but, once again, the folks at Germany’s Bielefeld University have managed to turn something inherently creepy into a rather lighthearted affair . HECTOR, or hexapod cognitive autonomously operating robot, was designed to help its creators understand how exactly real animals manage to move so gracefully.
