Microsoft’s MIX is no more, to be rolled into another BUILD-like conference

Whispers that Microsoft’s MIX conference was on life support have just proven true. Redmond confirmed on its blog that the yearly web-centric conference will no longer be held, as it refocuses its efforts on larger and more broad platform-centric events, much in the vein of last year’s BUILD . Following its pull-out from CES , the company muses focusing on less events means it’ll maximize the effectiveness of its engineers and the press alike

Case Study: StyleWorks Premium Photoshop Styles

This past March, I decided it was time to put my skills as a Drupal developer to use and launch a new online business. I knew early on that I wanted this business to be product-based, and after several weeks of playing with different ideas, I settled on selling premium Photoshop layer styles

Twitter’s Ad Crackdown Alienates Developers… Again

Twitter once again pulled a fast one on app developers when it announced today that third-party ads will be banned from the service. Such behavior tends to leave one’s developer community feeling more than a little alienated , but this isn’t an open source lovefest, after all

How “Open” Is Google Really? [VIDEO]

While we were thrilled with Google’s many announcements at Google I/O , particularly the announcements that went against the grain of Apple’s one-man-one-device ethos, we have to take the company’s claims to openness, choice and freedom with a grain of salt. This is America, Google is a major and successful corporation, and as such, it will be “open” usually when such behavior is profitable. The company’s not going to open-source its search algorithm any time soon, for example, or make its advertising software free for modification and redistribution

Apple Didn’t Kill Flash, HTML5 Did

The battle over Flash and its role (or lack thereof) on the iPhone really came to a head today when Apple CEO Steve Jobs published an open letter expressing why his company won’t support Flash on the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad . Adobe CEO Shantanu Narayen spoke with the Wall Street Journal to deliver his response. Unsurprisingly, the arguments from both parties are self-serving in parts and gloss over some of the real world realities.

Twitter Launches Countdown to OAuthcalypse

In 9 weeks, 3 days and some change, Twitter will turn off basic authentication for apps, making OAuth the only way to connect to Twitter applications. The Twitter API team has even launched a countdown to what it calls “OAuthcalypse.” Currently, there are two ways to connect to apps: basic authentication, where you provide your username and password to a third party, and OAuth, which allows you to connect to apps without giving away your account information
